Thinking was that because you have 3 mainframes running 24/7 you at least know your system works.
For safety critical software you'd want a system running 24/7 telling you everything is ok.
You'd want other systems running 24/7 running background checks.
You'd want systems running 24/7 that can reconstruct a baseline from an earlier baseline and a secure audit trail.
If people claim to be fielding safety critical systems and don't have this, they are frauds.
Your question makes little sense.
Do you mean you think it would be a good idea for computers to go back to using punch cards on mainframe readers to do simple computational math?
The reason they had 4 mainframes was that they were trying to create computational power that nowadays can be recreated and surpassed on a simple device like your cell phone or a calculator.
Don't let the huge equipment and money investment of 40 years ago make you think it was better. It wasn't. A programmable coffee maker has more thinking power than those computers did.
