Mother Goose
I was wondering what the meaning of the Mother Goose rhyme.."How many miles to Babylon?" is. Does anyone know?
I read in The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes that the rhyme was originally, "How many miles to BABYLAND".
It was a simple little rhyme to entertain babies on a lap or even send them to sleep. The "can we get there by candlelight?" suggests to me it may have been a lullaby.
Not all nursery rhymes were originally for adults - many of them, such as "Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross" or "Rock a Bye Baby" are lullabies or simple games for babies and toddlers. "How Many Miles?" appears to be one of these.
