Spiders and Their Webs (Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12)
USD 16.95

In Spiders and Their Webs biologist-photographer Darlyne Murawski shares her fascination with web-spinning spiders with young readers. They will learn that not all spiders weave webs, but those that do not only create an incredible variety of designs but also have different ways of using their webs to catch their prey. Readers will meet some familiar spiders, such as the argiope and the comb-footed spider, that they might find in their backyards or in their basements. But they will also meet spiders that live in tropical rain forests, underwater, and in tunnels underground. Readers will discover that some spiders make patterns in their webs that mimic flowers. When a bee comes too near, instead of getting a sip of nectar, it finds itself trapped in a sticky mess. The ogre-faced spider hangs from a silk thread and holds its web between its front feet while it waits for a caterpillar or some other prey to come along. Then it traps its victim by casting its web on top of it like a net. The Hawaiian happy-faced spider uses a sticky strand of silk like a lasso to rope a meal and bring it back to its web. The European water spider gathers bubbles of air then dives underwater and releases the air into its web. Eventually the web balloons up to look like a diving bell. The spider swims out to catch food with its feet and then drags it inside the bubble web to eat. Readers will learn that not all web masters are solitary hunters. Some live in colonies of hundreds of thousands of tiny spiders and make webs that are big enough to cover a garbage truck! By working together they can catch prey that is many times larger than they are.The author's easy-to-read text explains all theaction captured in her eye-catching, full-color photographs of the spiders and their webs. The book is enhanced by fact boxes that list scientific names, common names, food, habitat, and body size, playful illustrations that highlight interesting behavior, and fun trivia. Readers also get some insight into other ways spiders use their silk. The author shares experiences from the field, such as how she makes spider webs visible to photograph them (kids can do it too). Also included are a glossary of terms, a list of Web sites, and books for further reading.

The Black Girl Next Door: A Memoir (Touchstone Books)
USD 11.70

A powerful, beautifully written memoir about coming of age as a black girl in an exclusive white suburb in "integrated," post-Civil Rights California in the 1970s and 1980s. At six years of age, after winning a foot race against a white classmate, Jennifer Baszile was humiliated to hear her classmate explain that black people "have something in their feet to make them run faster than white people." When she asked her teacher about it, it was confirmed as true. The next morning, Jennifer's father accompanied her to school, careful to "assert himself as an informed and concerned parent and not simply a big, black, dangerous man in a first-grade classroom." This was the first of many skirmishes in Jennifer's childhood-long struggle to define herself as "the black girl next door" while living out her parents' dreams. Success for her was being the smartest and achieving the most, with the consequence that much of her girlhood did not seem like her own but more like the "family project." But integration took a toll on everyone in the family when strain in her parents' marriage emerged in her teenage years, and the struggle to be the perfect black family became an unbearable burden. A deeply personal view of a significant period of American social history, The Black Girl Next Door deftly balances childhood experiences with adult observations, creating an illuminating and poignant look at a unique time in our country's history.

Squadron Signal Books- F4u Corsair In Action
USD 16.98

The Corsair was first conceived as a high-speed, high-altitude fighter for the Navy in 1938 when Chance Voughts design team drew up plans for a fighter with a 1,800 h.p. engine and a huge 13-foot propeller. The Corsairs famous inverted gull wing design was introduced to allow prop clearance. Handling problems delayed the aircrafts deployment aboard carriers, but Marine Corps pilots quickly took to the powerful, rugged fighter and VMF-124, the first Marine squadron to fly the Corsair in combat, also produced the first Corsair air ace, Kenneth A. Walsh, by the summer of 1943. A total of 12,571 Corsairs were built between 1940 and 1952, most of them by Vought, but hundreds by Goodyear and Brewster as those companies assembly lines had to be pressed into service to meet soaring demand for the remarkable aircraft. Jim Sullivans exhaustive volume surveys the history of the Corsair from its first prototype to the restored warbirds that have continued to delight air show audiences down to the present day. Tokyo on Foot: Travels in the City's Most Colorful Neighborhoods
USD 15.61

Florent Chavouet, a young graphic artist, spent six months exploring Tokyo while his girlfriend interned at a company there. Each day he would set forth, with a pouch full of colored pencils and a sketchpad, to visit different neighborhoods. This stunning book records the city that he got to know during his adventures, a gritty, vibrant place, full of ordinary people going about their daily lives. Realistically rendered city views or posters of pop stars contrast with cartoon sketches of iconic objects or droll vignettes, like a housewife walking her pet pig and a Godzilla statue in a local park. With wit, a playful sense of humor, and the colored pencils of his kit, Florent Chavouet sets aside the question of urban ugliness or beauty and captures the Japanese essence of a great city.

Pita-Ten, Volume 6
USD 4.00

This book picks up where volume 5 left off with Kotarou still trapped in the past. Taro takes Shima to see the apple tree. The apples are just now beginning to show from their flowers. Shima is still plagued by the thought that she is the one causing everyone pain. In order to cheer her up, he sings the very song that Shino sang in volume 5. Shima wants to learn the song so she can sing it to Taro in the future. Taro and Shima also make a promise to watch the Obon Week fireworks together. Taro finds a little sparrow that he and Shima took care of dead inside of the apple tree's birdhouse. He looks down from the tree and sees other birds scattered at the foot of the tree also in bloody dead masses. Just as Kotarou goes in to examine the dead bird scene, he is thrust into darkness only to reappear later in the future. The Rice Merchant's shop has been destroyed in a riot and Shima is long gone. Taro is heartbroken that they missed not only the fireworks, but also the chance for her to try a fully ripened apple from the tree. Kotarou finally puts two-and-two together that Taro and his great-grandfather are the same person and he awakens in the show just feet away from where Misha, Shia and Nya are still bickering. Nya offers up Kotarou's life force to help replenish Shia. Shia hesitates and Misha sweeps in and flies Kotarou away. Misha is trying to mother Kotarou by literally licking his wounds...she spots some blood on his mouth and then the two kiss! The next morning Kotarou awakens to find Misha stayed watch all night. The two hatch a plan to find out more so they can find a way to save Shia. They decide to journey back into the past...but things don't go quite as expected. They end up in Tokyo with Taro in his late teens/early twenties and in college. As luck would have it, he comes across Shima after trying to hide from some man chasing him. Shia has barely aged a single day since he last saw her and she is now practicing the fine art of being a geisha girl! Taro and Shima get together often to reminisce and so he can give Shima emotional support and feedback as she practices her dance steps. Taro learns that Shima somehow knew about the dead sparrow. Several months pass, until one rainy night, Taro and his girlfriend come across Shima who has come looking for Taro. Taro's girlfriend promptly belittles Shima for her lowly job. She turns to run and Taro follows. He comforts her and learns that she has been freed from her geisha apprenticeship only to become someone's concubine! [Ironically that someone is Nya]. Shima promises to meet Taro on her first day off (the first of the following month) at a shrine in Tokyo. Just as they are to meet a massive earthquake rocks the city. [Historical background: This is the Great Kanto Quack that occurred on September 1, 1923]. Taro goes out to find Shima and finds her buried in some rubble. As he tries to free her, the structure starts to collapse and injures him. Shima cries out, transforming into her demon form, and blasts the rocks into dust (and probably caused Tokyo to be set on fire). Shima's appearance has changed and she now has the older appearance that she and Shia share. Taro tells her that he wants to be with her. Flash forward to a few years down the line, we learn that Shima and Taro had two kids, Kotaroh and Shino, and are living a quiet life away from everything...and then Nya comes looking for Shima. He reveals Shima is a demon and Kotarou deduces that Shima/Shia is actually his great-grandmother. Kotarou is then thrown into the future without Misha-san and ends up meeting Kotaroh by a lake. He is in his early-teens now, but he can see Kotarou...just like he can angels. Kotaroh is also hypersensitive to other forces as well. Kotarou rushes off to find Kotaroh's house to only find that Shima has been gone for years. He also learns Kotaroh is an outcast and feared by the villagers because of his bizarre gifts. As night falls, Kotarou finds Kotaroh by the pond and an ang
