What are good farm animals that help pay for themselves?
I am trying to find farm animals that would pay for themselves in some way. By producing wool, milk or something other than slaughter. I have a $10k budget and 20 acres to work with.

I pretty much could break even on raising laying hens and rabbits.. Though, eventually you do have to slaughter.. Though, if you leave the chicken's free range, the wild animals around will tend to cull the older ones for you.. Still, that's hard when they've pretty much been pets.
If you have a lot of 4-h groups around, you may be able to break even with a couple breeder sows by selling the piglets in the springtime. You do have to start out with decent meat lines though. When they raise them for a 4H meat project, they do have to meet certain specifications. In other words, you would have to shop around quite a bit and start with a female piglet from good lines and then would probably have to pay a professional to do artificial insemination.. You'd also want to get involved in a 4h group before even starting to make sure there was any kind of market in your area.
I would consider that another 'barely breaking even' project..
Pretty much, anything you do with animals will barely break even if you do it right..
You could also try angora rabbits, but, they are a ton of upkeep. You pretty much need an air-conditioned room with air exchange and filtration. You also would have to Learn How to pluck the wool and spin it as there is a very limited market for just raw angora wool...
You'll figure out why that is when you try to spin it.. lol... It's great to work with when you're knitting, but I about pulled my hair out trying to learn how to spin it.. I pretty much gave up on it, but, I also couldn't find anyone local to show me how..
This lady does it, but, she's pretty much got the best English Angoras in the nation.. so, I don't know how quick she would be to respond to questions.. The other drawback is you'd have to start out with good wool lines, not just any angora..
